Mission South Stack - Flooring For A Lighthouse
The Oakwill team were awarded the contract to install new flooring at South Stack Lighthouse through Bell Group. The lighthouse is over 200 years old and built by Trinity House on a small island off the coast of Holy Island in Anglesey.
Taking on the challenge
It was a perfect opportunity for us to showcase what we do, a promotional video documenting a unique job. It was a real ‘Mission impossible’ in terms of getting the materials to site and accessing the lighthouse in the middle of Winter. We approached Yoke Creative Agency to help us capture our very own ‘Mission South Stack’ film!
The most challenging part of the job would be to get the flooring materials and people to site. With the 400 steps down the cliffs and then a foot bridge to the lighthouse, the only way to get materials in was by ship then helicopter.
Stormy seas
There were several failed attempts due to storms, but in slightly calmer weather the Ship ‘Galatea’ got as close as it could to the lighthouse and a helicopter carried all flooring materials across. It was a dramatic spectacle!
Mission accomplished!
When all the materials were in and tools carried down, we started by fixing the plywood to the sub floor and levelled areas using Ardex levelling compound. We then fitted a lovely blue vinyl safety flooring by Altro using Fball flooring glue.
It was great working with Trinity house & Bell group to complete this challenge, we’ll certainly remember this job!
